Painting Tips and Techniques

When it comes to painting preparation is the most important procedure in ensuring a quality finish. Below are some tips to help with both your preparation and painting techniques to make sure you get the best paint finish.

  • Paint the trim before painting the ceiling and walls
When our tradesmen paint a room they follow the order of painting all trim before painting the walls and ceilings. It’s easier and faster to tape off the trim than to tape off the walls. When painting the trim, you don’t have to be neat, just focus on getting a smooth finish on the wood, don’t worry if you get some painting on the walls or ceiling you’ll cover it later when it’s time to paint them.
  • Clean dirty surfaces so the paint can adhere correctly!
When painting all surfaces it’s important that they are clean. Any bits of dirt, oil or mould will cause the paint to chip or peel off. If an area is particularly dirty a coat of pigmented is advised along with a thorough clean of the surface.
  • To avoid lap marks, roll the full height of the wall and keep a wet edge
Roller marks, or lap marks, occur if you don’t maintain a wet edge when painting. To get a smooth finish when painting, sand down all uneven areas, remove all dust from the walls, prime and follow with a thick coat of paint. When painting walls make sure you roll up and down the full height of the wall, moving slightly with each stroke.
  • Feather out paint where you can’t keep a wet edge
You can’t cover large areas like ceilings or large walls in continuous strokes so the best way to minimize lap marks on these areas is to feather out the paint along the edges. The thinner, feathered coat of paint will avoid the buildup that causes the lap mark.
  • Soak your brushes when painting with waterborne paints
Soak your paint brush for 20 minutes before painting with waterborne paints then shake and squeeze excess moisture out of the brush. It will improve the flow of the paint straight away, as though it already has paint in the brush.
  • Add a hot weather additive when painting in warmer conditions
When painting in warm and dry conditions or painting on a hot surface paint can dry very fast which can make it tricky to get the best result. Adding a hot weather additive will slow down the dry time and give you more time to get the best result.
